A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results
Fish is a story written about a woman named Mary Jane Ramirez whose
life was perfectly normal, as she and her husband just moved to Seattle
for her husband Dan’s new job. One year after living in Seattle, Dan
tragically died of an aneurysm. Mary Jane quickly found work at First
Guarantee Financial, where she immediately became respected as an
ethical hard working type of supervisor. In contrast, there was a group
on the third floor of her building that was famous for the opposite
reason. Words like unresponsive, zombie, unpleasant, and wasteland were
frequently used to describe this group. Her colleagues actually spent
their free time amusing themselves with horror stories from the third
floor. Everyone participated, because everyone had a horror story. Every
department had contact with them in some way, because they processed
most of the transactions. The place was so dead; it sucked the life
right out of you. Because of all of the unforeseen expenses of Dan’s
death, Mary Jane reluctantly accepted the manager’s promotion on the
third floor when offered to her.
Working on the third floor immediately got to her. At times, she though
to herself that it is hard to believe there was actual living human
beings working on this floor. Her new Boss Bill was almost equally
unbearable. He had a special name for the third floor. He called it the
toxic energy dump, which was quite angering and embarrassing to Mary
Jane. She was so upset; she impulsively went on a walk instead of eating
lunch, when she realized that although the term was harsh, it was true.
Her thoughts were interrupted when she turned down Pike Place and saw a
huge crowd of well-dressed people, clustered around one of the fish
markets, the world famous Pike Place Fish Market, and everyone was
laughing.
